Seminar on CSP
29-30 November, 2011, Seville, Spain

The Discussion Group Meeting on Renewable Energy Sources and the Seminar on CSP will be held at the TRH Alcora Sevilla Hotel, in Seville, Spain on the 29th and 30th of November, 2011, in cooperation with CENER, as a side event of the CSP Today Conference.

Following the conclusions drawn during the 2nd Discussion Groups’ Meeting, this event provides the D/G experts a chance to meet face-to-face and further work on co-operation in the specific field of Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Plants (CSTP) technologies, an area of common strong interest as identified in the previous meeting.
In this respect, the Network in co-operation with its Partners organises an event that combines:

  • Seminar on CSTP for facilitating EU-GCC know-how transfer and exchange of best practices;
  • Discussion Group Meeting for furthering co-operation in this specific field and for highlighting prospects and opportunities for both EU and GCC stakeholders; and
  • A Technical Site Visit at Solúcar Complex & Gemasolar Plant in the region of Seville.

 

Seminar Topics

The objective of the seminar is to familiarize the Network experts with the underlying principles of CSTP technologies, provide them with a clear understanding of their present status, and engage them in the design of CSTP plants by introducing them to the design process, and giving them an overview of the different computer tools commonly used in that process.
The main thematic topics to be addressed are following:

  • Fundamentals of Concentrating Solar Thermal Power (CSTP) systems.
  • Overview of the state of the art of CSTP technologies.
  • Overview of the CSTP industry. Technology value chain and main industry players.
  • CSTP plant design: Goals, processes, and computer tools.

Manuel Blanco, Discussion Group Convener on Renewable Energy Sources

Manuel Blanco is the Director of the Solar Thermal Energy Department of the National Renewable Energy Centre of Spain(CENER) and Chairperson of the Executive Committee of SolarPACES. He has more than twenty nine years of experience as a solar researcher and engineer, contributing to advancing the state-of-the-art of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technologies. He is Doctor of Engineering on Applied Physics and Master of Science in Energy Engineering by the University of Massachusetts and Doctor of Industrial Engineering by the University of Seville. He has a wide researcher and teaching experience on Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, and Computer Simulation of Energy Systems.

He has been, among other positions, a Full Professor and Chair of the Engineering Department of the University of Texas at Brownsville; Director of the Plataforma Solar de Almería of CIEMAT; Advisor to the President of the Andalusian Energy Agency; and member of the International Test and Evaluation Team (IEA).

He is author of numerous scientific publications, has participated in a large number of national and international expert groups and committees, and has represented Spain in various international scientific forums.
